This is Gabriel. He is a student at UCLA, majoring in computer engineering. What he sees when he looks at me, I have no idea. What he hears when I talk to him, I don’t know. I do know that for the first time in a very, very long time, I can genuinely say that I am happy - the happiest I have ever been.
Mia: Don’t you hate that?
Vince: What?
Mia: Uncomfortable silences. Why do we feel it’s necessary to yak about bullshit in order to feel comfortable?
Vincent: I don’t know. That’s a good question.
Mia: That’s when you know you’ve found somebody special. When you can just shut the fuck up for a minute and comfortably enjoy the silence.
To Veronica
A very nice & attractive person I had the pleasure of meeting. I want to congratulate you on your important achievement in life: your High School graduation. I hope you use this to your advantage, which I’m sure you will. Well Veronica, it’s a very big world out there, and I wish you very much success in what the future holds for you, and of course I want to wish you the most important thing of all…happiness always. Because without Happiness life will be more difficult, and a person like you deserves the very best. There is so much to say and so little to write on. So I will end it at that. I just want you to know you mean a lot to me in so many different ways, and if you ever feel like the world is cheating you and you need someone to talk to, I will always be here for you. So in conclusion, I wish you get everything you want out of life and if you feel it’s too hard at first, just try a little harder. I know you could achieve anything you desire…

This is the only entry in my mother’s yearbook. Who would have known that in 1990 - 3 years after my father wrote this - that they would get married? And 21 years later, they have an 18-year old college student, a 13-year old 8th grade student, and a soon-to-be 12-year old 7th grade student? They seldom show it, but I know they truly love one another. Times may be difficult right now for us as a family, but I know their love and strength will break through any barrier.
P.S. I don’t care if it was the 80’s, mom. That hairstyle…I can’t. No.
